Hamilton, VA

Hamilton is a very small town in Northern Virginia, situated at the western base of the Catoctin Mountains. Hamilton only encompasses 0.2 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 500 people per the last census.

Hamilton, VA is loaded with historical monuments and heritage. Europeans began to immigrate here in 1730 and live with native Americans. In 1768, George and Tabitha Roach Tavenner are accredited with building the first house in this town, an estate called Harmony. The town got its name from Charles Bennett Hamilton, who founded a store (Hamilton Store) here in 1835. In 1865 The Harmony Skirmish occurred here which is an historically significant event. In 1868 a railroad was laid from Alexandria to Hamilton which became part of the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad. In 1900, it became the second largest town of Loudoun County.

The Hamilton Masonic Lodge was built in 1873. It showcases the 16th Century Italian Renaissance Architecture which is characterized by the fusion of Palladianism and Neoclassicism. It served as a meeting hall and a high school simultaneously in the early days.

A celebration of its founding, Hamilton Day is celebrated in May or June every year. Children participate in 1/2 or 2 mile races. A Hamilton Day Parade is held with dance troops, classic cars, and more. The local establishments showcase their cuisine.
